Copperheads are the most common venomous snakes in the Eastern US. These venomous pit vipers account for more cases of venomous bites than other species but their venom is the least toxic. If disturbed, they will bite only as a last resort. They will freeze in place and wait for the danger to pass or vibrate their tail to imitate a rattlesnake. Unless the person steps on the snake, grabs it, etc, they prefer not to attack. The reason for a high number of bites is due to their abundance and they can be found close to developed areas.
